What is Family or Friend Care?

Family or friend childcare is a desirable form of childcare as it is generally a grandmother or an auntie (friends are sometimes referred as auntie) of which the child is familiar and comfortable with, and much loved by. The child care may take place in the family or friends own home or in the child’s home.

Family care is the originating childcare, since the beginning of time family has cared for each other; grandparents caring for grandchildren and great grandchildren – children caring for their parents, grandparents, and great-grandparents. This is, and always will be a natural selection of childcare.

Children are in familiar surroundings with a family member or friend who you can be fairly sure have your child’s best interests at heart and genuine love to share. Family and friend care do have their advantages

Some parents question whether this arrangement is suitable in our present time, when so much emphasis is placed on childcare with educational programs and socialization. Most experts agree that having a loving, attentive caregiver is best for a child’s development. Ongoing studies confirm the importance of quality childcare, no matter what kind you use.

Some families have faced some difficulties when using this type of care, but have found ways of overcoming the difficulties. It is in the best interest of the child to maintain a good working relationship between parents and caregivers.

If you are comfortable with having a family member or a friend care for your child, chances are that you share similar views on childrearing. However, even if you have the same healthy attitude it is important to review your philosophies and be clear about how you want all issues to be handled, such as discipline, meals and snacks, nap times and playtime.

It is important to keep in mind that your caregiver may be unavailable at times and a backup plan should be in place.
