Important things to know

The general characteristics of a nanny or in-home care provider are:

  • Nannies in Canada are not licensed or regulated as they are in other countries. Ensure that the Nanny you hire has minimum requirements such as: First Aid certification in Child Care; Security Clearances and Child Welfare checks.
  • Care is provided in the family's own home. The nanny either comes into the home on a daily basis or is provided with living arrangements in the home itself.
  • Nannies may or may not have child care education. The better the educational credentials of the nanny, the better the care for your child. There will be increased salary expectations for nannies with educational qualifications in early childhood education
  • Nannies cost will vary depending on qualifications, availability and additional benefits offered by families. In larger cities care can cost between $300.00 per week to $700.00 per week plus benefits. Benefits to consider may be: health benefits, vacation and sick days available.
  • Nannies are direct employees of the families hiring them. As a result, the family is responsible as an employer to make the appropriate deductions and contributions to Worker's Compensation, CPP, IE and Taxation on a monthly basis. There are agencies available to assist you with this service for reasonable fees.
  • Nannies may be hired by families independently or through a placement agency.
  • Nanny Placement Agencies can provide a variety of services to parents and nannies. These may include but not be inclusive of:
    • Job descriptions.
    • Nanny placement services.
    • Contract negotiations.
    • Follow up visitation
    • Monthly employee deductions and remittances for families.
    • Other services such as: back up childcare services for sick days.
  • Whether families find care independently or through a placement agency, you need to know what you want. Until this is established finding the nanny of your dreams will be difficult to find.
