- Keep it professional and respectful . It must be a friendly relationship but you are NOT friends. This is an employer/employee relationship telling stories, outlining personal details is not suitable. Don’t second guess her decisions and trust she will do a good job. Address complaints or concerns with the nanny in a constructive manner-do not attack the nanny personally and stick to the issues.
- Offer a fair wage for fair work . Just as you would not want to work for limiting wages neither do nannies. Depending on location, duties, how many children are cared for, educational levels and experience you will pay anywhere from $300 per week to $700 per week for nanny care.
- Set your boundaries and stick to them . Remember you hired a nanny to care for your children. You have outlined duties in an agreement. If you wish to add more duties, this must be discussed and compensated accordingly. Just because the nanny is in your home, it does not mean they are there to provide other duties at your discretion. Discuss household rules in advance and implement them consistently. Support the nanny when they are enforcing predetermined household rules. This is like a marriage and the partners are the nanny and the parents. There are rules for everyone and they need to be respected with dignity; there are rules for the children and a unified front is required.
- Be flexible . Allow for some changes in you nanny’s schedule. Just as you need to go to appointments from time to time, so does the nanny. Pre-planning for these appointments will help to ease any stress for both of you. Just make sure these appointments are consistent and patterned and start creating a barrier in your employer/employee relationship.
- Communicate . Communicate, communicate and more communication is the key. Use several forms of communication: written by using daily report cards, journals or even pictures to share how the day is going; verbal on a daily basis and by having appointed meetings; informal meetings over a treat, coffee or tea will build trust. No matter how it happens ongoing communication is essential to build trust between a nanny and the parents to understand the needs of the child.
- Show your appreciation . Everyone likes to be appreciated from time to time. It can be written or verbal. Small or big. No matter what form it takes, it is always appreciated. It is a good thing to recognize accomplishments of others who are important in our lives. How much more important is someone caring for our children!
- Respect each others privacy . Make sure private time and matters are maintained by you and the children. This is a respectful thing to do.
If there are agreements, verbal or written honor them, support them and treat them with the utmost respect . In the end you will have a successful childcare experience.
