What is Occasional Care?
Occasional care covers an area also known as babysitters. An occasional caregiver or babysitter is generally a neighbour, friend or a relative who will care for your child in your home or in their own home. This care is usually required when a parent will want to go out for an evening, have an appointment, job interview, or just run some errands.
What do families do when they are new to an area, don’t live close to relatives or friends, or are visiting another area and don’t know any babysitters?
There are babysitting agencies who can assist in matching childcare needs with a babysitter, caregiver. Agencies can be used in instances when parents are traveling and cannot carry out the interview process themselves and want the security of having their children cared for by reputable individuals. Agencies will screen applicants before they send them out on assignments. The process may be different for each agency. Before using agencies ensure their caregivers are insured and bonded.
The age of the “babysitter” will also vary according to the standards each agency sets. These agencies can send a caregiver to a client’s home, hotel room, or a location where an event is happening such as a wedding reception.
If a parent wants to look for a babysitter/caregiver on their own there are some important steps to take before having them come into your home to care for your children.
When parents are searching for occasional care, just as in any other care, the search needs to be planned and completed prior to the care occurring. Parents can arrange for their own care with a babysitter as the family requires their occasional child care. Whether a babysitter is organized by parents or an agency, it may be difficult to give the babysitter/caregiver all the important information they need to know in a couple of minutes before leaving. It helps to leave the babysitter a list of important information and emergency contacts. Refer to our helpful hints to compile this information.
